Chapter Fifteen

Bree

I WAS SO EXCITED, SO tired of being stuck in the house. I couldn’t wait to go somewhere new. This trip was my getaway—my prison break. I planned on taking advantage of every minute of it. My dad had tried to talk me out of it again last night, but I was not going to be swayed. Life was short. I had learned that the hard way and didn’t plan on leaving this earth without living as much as I could.

“You good?” Luke asked, leaning into me.

I smiled, nodding my head. I was wearing my sunglasses on the plane. The light from the windows was just enough to make me squint. “I’m so good. I know we just took a flight, but this feels like the first time in a very long time. I also know it isn’t a vacation and the trip won’t be a blast, but I am excited to see something new.”

“Hopefully, we’ll get there, and all will be well. We can spend a couple days seeing the city if you like.”

“I would love that, but please don’t think you have to entertain me. I came along to support you and I will be just fine.”

“Thanks.”

When we touched down in Dallas, I immediately felt the difference in the climate. It was warm and sticky. Luke never let go of my hand as we navigated the busy airport. I could feel my anxiety ramping up with the crush of people going to and from, and being unable to see them clearly. Luke picked up the rental car he had reserved and quickly ushered me into the car.

“How are you doing?” he asked.

I blew out a breath. “That was kind of intense.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I have to get familiar with these things again. I’ve been alone and cooped up in that house for so long, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be in a crowd.”

“I’m sure it isn’t easy when you can’t see well,” he said.

“No, but so much better than blind, plus having you there next to me certainly makes it easier to tolerate.”

I tried to look out the window, but everything was a blur. I could see the outline of tall buildings and the movement of cars going past the window, but not much more than that. When the car came to a stop, I looked out the window, trying to see the house.

“We’ll check in and get settled before we go to the hospital,” he said.

“Check in?” I questioned.

“Check into our room. I hope it’s okay that I only got one room.”

“Yes, it’s fine. I just assumed we would be staying at your mom’s house.”

He made a choking sound. “No. I don’t want to be there, and trust me, you don’t want to be there either.”

I didn’t know what that meant but it didn’t sound good. “Hotel it is.”

He grabbed both our suitcases, before I hooked my arm through his and let him lead the way. I could hear the sound of a waterfall and was curious to see where it was coming from.
